At 53 years it takes a powerful film to shatter the stupor of indifference and boredom that I unconsciously slip into from day to day.
The last film to really rock my world like that was Saving Private Ryan, do you remember that? Of course you do, it slammed into you with the force of a howitzer, it stunned you and drug you off to war how could you forget?
7 Pounds is not like that, although it will rock you and cause you to confront your own ideas about who you are. 7 Pounds is like an innocuous worm that enters your mind through your eyes and ears, you are not conscious of the invasion. While you are watching the movie your underlying self talk could well be "yeah so....", the movie is so craftily made that as you watch the movie you are not exactly sure you are following the story line. The viewer is left to assemble the film into a coherent whole and is unable to do so till the last four minutes of the film when the puzzle suddenly is solved leaving you shattered by the impact of the story line and what you are seeing. Suddenly you are overcome with the simultaneous emotions of joy and heartbreak, compassion, gratitude and excruciating loss. The tragedy of life overcome by the courageous triumph of a man driven to extremes an the unending suffering that is the human condition.
This film is by far the best work yet submitted to us by Mr. Will Smith who has stretched his talent to such a degree as to make of himself an absolute master of his craft. The supporting cast is drawn from among the most talented actors and actresses in the industry. The film deserves your patronage and will earn your respect. You deserve what this film will do for you and to you.
This movie is not a tear jerker it is an ignition system for water works.
